I know, I know!! It has been forever, but do you really expect me to write when there is warm water to frolic in? I didn't think so.
Anyway, I got to Jakarta alright, but my six hours actually in that city were hell. I have never wanted to be anything but a single, white female until that day. I would have traded them all.
A thirty-three hour bus ride with a very creepy man was not fun, but then I got to Bukkintinggi, which is right below the equator. I met a greet Sweedish guy who hung out with me and drank really cheap beer with me for three days. Then I went north and he went south.
I do find it strange how people just let other people into their lives in such an unadulterated way. No barriers. I know so much about some of the people that I have met and yet, I will most likely not see any of them again. Maybe that's why we opened up to each other?
Anyway, after I left the quaint little town of Bukkintinggi, I got on another bus and sat next to a man who vomitted for the duration of my trip...a whole seventeen hours. (In case you are keeping track, that is 50 total bus hours.Yuck.)
I did manage to get myself to Parapat to catch a ferry to Samosir Island. This island is in the middle of Lake Toba, and is about the size of Singapore. I stayed in a sleepy little village of Tuk-Tuk, which quickly became my favorite place on earth.
I only intended on staying for about five days, but that turned into three and a half weeks, and I basically got dragged out. The people there are so amazing. I have never felt so completely relaxed and safe and comfortable and, well....at home.
But now I am in Medan...which is a shithole. I have met up with three Irish girls who are on the same travel plan as me for the next few days, so at least I am not enduring it alone. We are crossing to Malaysia tomorrow, staying one night and then catching a twenty-two hour train ride to Bangkok.
Just thinkng of it makes me exhausted....but I know it'll be worth it when I get there. It better be, or I'll be on the first train back to Tuk-Tuk.
